The Gamusa of Assam. Each thread, spun on the Maatir Xaal or manual loom preserved through time. The cotton is handspun and is called pokuwa huta or handspun thread. Automation threatens its survival but you and I can retain this legacy of soft, breathable cotton. Although, Gamusa can also be grand with heavy motifs and fabrics like mulberry silk, Tussar Silk or Muga Silk- all mark festivities, rituals and thee grand luxury that marked every rural household. Today, it is on the wane as is the weaving and the tradition of carrying one.
As light and gentle as an Assamese summer breeze each Gamusa is a sustainable symphony of natural fibre and zero carbon footprint. So, drape it as a towel, a scarf, or a wall hanging, or gift it to honour someone as a touch of Assam’s love in a box as we promote environment-friendly traditions towards climate action. Own a piece of our Gamusa, help us motivate our weavers to keep the weaving traditional alive with the traditional loom and honour our small weavers for a climate- resilient community.
